Inspiration for Life Purpose

A New Thing?

It’s in the air; they say spring has sprung. Like a public service announcement, the weather is dictating that it’s upon us. Like a king to a scribe, the sunshine and temperatures decree change has come. But what do you do when you don’t feel the newness of spring or see any evidence that God is doing something new in your life?

That’s the time to let go of the former and exercise the power of perception. God said something like that to the children of Israel in Isaiah. Speaking through his prophet, he said, “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland” (Isaiah 43:19 NIV). That sounds great, except that Isaiah’s tenure as a prophet was when Israel couldn’t sense any “new thing.” They were in exile, attacked by the Assyrians, and taken captive by the Babylonians.

But sometimes, we must allow our eyes to see beyond our present circumstances and reach for something new. That’s called vision—not physical eyesight—but vision, perception, a “knowing in your knower” that something is about to change. If the weather is decreeing it, we should too. We know that “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit” (Proverb 18:21). In other words, you will eat the fruit of what you say.

Still, sometimes the past hinders what we say in our present and, in turn, affects our future. But remember the past—the former things—have already taken place. The old has come and gone. So don’t dwell on the past. Decree a new thing in your life. When you do, you empower it to spring forth.

See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you.” (Isaiah 42:9 NIV)
