Inspiration for Life Purpose

The End of a Thing

Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride.

— Ecclesiastes 7:8 NLT

For many, the end of the year is a time of mixed emotions. Regrets and sorrow for things lost play a tug of war with hopes for better times ahead. The temptation to reflect on things that have gone wrong is strong, enhanced by the reality that precious time has gone by. And if we yield to the temptation to focus on what’s gone wrong, we join the ranks of Lot’s wife, who turned to a pillar of salt for looking back (Genesis 19:26).

The end of year may not feel like a triumph, but the Scripture says, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit” (Ecclesiastes 7:8 KJV).  The end of the year is better because:

  • It is an opportunity to reflect on the good that has transpired, the testimonies and goodness of God we experienced, and offer gratitude and thanksgiving to God.
  • It is the perfect time to let go of the past, refocus, and press toward the mark, looking hopefully in expectation for better things.
  • It is a time to decree and declare better things and divine alignment with the will of God for our lives.

So today, thank God that you have lived to see the end of the year, and resist the temptation to look back.

“There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.”

— C.S. Lewis
